Glass balustrades and staircases are designed around two things: the height from which a fall is possible, and the base the glass is fixed into. Where a fall is possible, the panel is made from laminated glass (triplex), which stays in its fixing even if the plies break. Tempered glass on its own is used for interior dividers that carry no protective role.
Fixing is done with a base profile, with point fittings anchored into concrete or steel, or by slotting the glass into a channel. You settle the laminate build-up, the handrail type, the treatment of the free edges and, for stairs, the structure that carries the load of the treads.
